Christmas is fast approaching and we have a few ideas of areas that we can sort in advance – and that includes preparing food, shopping for presents and getting the house sorted.
The first step in getting organised is to write it all down – have a plan.
You have probably already started doing this, but if like me you have been buying bits and pieces over the past number of weeks, you can often forget what you have bought. So write down a list of the people that you need to buy a gift for – and beside each name write a budget (you should have a budget, and stick to it) 😊 Tick them off as they are done.
Do as much shopping locally as you can, and support people who support Lakers such as: Supervalu Bray; Bannon’s Jewellers; Kelly’s Jewellers; Kilruddery House & Garden; Amphibian King; The Sports Room, Wicklow; Bray Wanderers, Bray Bowl, Catalyst Coffee and The Martello.
Usually one of the first things to do in this area is to make your Christmas Pudding, as it actually benefits from being made in advance so it is handy to have it done and out of the way. To help you get going, we have done a video of how to make your Christmas Pudding so why not have a look and get started by following the link below!
Our Cookery Class made their puddings and had a wonderful time stirring and making their wish! They all made sure not to tell anyone, or they won’t come through!

It is a good idea to take out your Christmas Card List at this stage and update any details that may have changed so you are ready. Maybe you can buy some Lakers Christmas cards and write them well before the final posting dates.
People in Ireland seem to have a thing about repainting or fixing up the house for Christmas. Do yourself a favour – unless it is broken, don’t try to do too much to your house before Christmas. There is enough stress anyway, if there is a mark on the wall, hang a decoration over it!! No one will care about the faded wallpaper – if we can get to see each other, that will be the gift.
Maybe if you don’t already do so, you can make sure that any Christmas wrapping paper you buy this year is recyclable. So none of the shiny or glitter paper, or better still maybe think of a more environmental way of wrapping – use bags, or brown paper – decorate this yourself or use any more sustainable alternative.
Now is a good time to check your Christmas lights. I always pack mine away each year in a separate box so I can take it down in advance of the other decorations and then I can test them early, leaving myself time to buy new ones if needed. I also try and leave myself a note in the box from last year about what worked well and what was broken! You never remember 11 months later!!
If you have to post presents to family or friends in another country, get them ready now. They would need to be posted by the beginning of December.
