Summer has come to an end here in Lakers Sports & Social but before we jump head first into the next term lets have a look back on the last six weeks!
See a lovely message from Lakers General Manager Joe Kelly, join us for our 10K Charity Run in Avondale and read all about our fun filled Summer!
We’ve just wrapped up another fantastic Summer Camp at Lakers Sports & Social, and what an incredible six weeks it has been! With some fantastic day trips out as well as days filled with fun and games; leaving the halls of Lakers full of laughter, this has been an unforgettable few weeks! Lets not forget impromptu karaoke in the garden with our member Ian teaching all the staff how to swing dance during drop in and members pulling in staff and parents alike to help answer the all important winning questions in ‘Who wants to be a Lakers millionaire’.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bain Capital and the BTH Fund for their generous sponsorship towards this year’s Summer Camp. Their support helped us create so many memorable experiences and ensured everyone had the chance to enjoy a safe, fun, and inclusive summer.
A special thank you also goes to Dave and Angelina from Fisher Outdoors for the amazing work they did on the outdoor space on the far side of our soon to be new building. This newly enhanced area will be enjoyed by the lucky kids in the crèche and our own members alike!
Of course, none of this would have been possible without our incredible staff and volunteers. Their passion, and dedication to our members enjoyment are the heart of Lakers, and we are so grateful for everything they do, thank you!
Looking ahead, we’re already excited for next summer, especially as we move into phase three of our building project! With the new sports hall and classrooms set to be completed just in time for next year’s Summer Camp, we look forward to offering even more activities and creating even more memories together.
Warm regards,
Joe Kelly
General Manager, Lakers Sports & Social

This year’s Lakers Summer Camp was an incredible six weeks filled with adventure, laughter, and unforgettable memories for our members, families, and volunteers. We kicked off summer with an amazing line-up of outings, from exploring the wonders of Dublin Zoo and taking a boat trip to Howth to visiting the breath-taking scenery of Glendalough and enjoying a fun-filled day at Delta Sensory Gardens in Carlow. Our members also loved testing their courage and curiosity at the Avondale Tree Top Walk and experiencing the excitement of Navan Adventure Park, alongside plenty of other fantastic trips.
Back at Lakers HQ, there was just as much fun to be had! Both our adult and junior members got hands-on with nature during weekly sessions in Knocksink Forest, learning about the trees, wildlife, and habitats with the help of the wonderful Knocksink staff, Wendy and Laura. We also squeezed in plenty of cinema trips, competitive games of Bingo, we welcomed back Boxercise and Keep fit to our timetable and of course arts and crafts which now fill up the hallways of Lakers with colour.

What a wonderful summer it’s been in the saddle! Every Monday morning, our riders joined Helen and Hannah at Cooladoyle Equestrian Centre, ready to take on new challenges and enjoy the freedom of horse riding.
They practiced their trotting skills in the arena before cooling off with a peaceful walk through the fields. These sessions weren’t just about riding, they offered a chance to build confidence, improve balance and coordination, and enjoy the calming connection that comes with being around horses. Riding has such powerful therapeutic benefits, from boosting focus and strength to reducing stress and lifting the mood.
Helen and Hannah loved to see how they progressed week after week, and spoke of how lovely it was to watch their confidence grow with each session.
A special thanks must go to Robyn and the wonderful team of volunteers at Cooladoyle Equestrian Centre.
Of course lets not forget the amazing horses, who made every Monday morning something to look forward to.

Lakers Sports & Social were honoured to welcome Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Féin, and TD John Brady to our centre at the beginning of July, along with their aides. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work we do, the community we’ve built, and the incredible members who make Lakers such a vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming place.
Our Chairperson, Fergus Finlay, and General Manager, Joe Kelly, were proud to give Mary Lou and John a tour of our newly renovated centre, highlighting the facilities that are helping us better support our members every day. During their visit, they met some of our amazing members — Mandy, Carl, Niamh, Jamie, and Ben — who generously shared their personal stories and spoke about what Lakers means to them. These heartfelt conversations were a powerful reminder of why our work matters and how much of a difference our community makes in people’s lives.
Mary Lou and John also met with members of the Lakers team, where they were briefed on the next exciting phase of our renovation project, which is set to begin this summer. Their interest and support mean a lot to us as we continue working towards creating even more opportunities and better facilities for our members.
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mary Lou, John, and their team for taking the time to visit, listen, and show their support for our vision and mission. It was an inspiring day for everyone involved, and we look forward to sharing more updates on our ongoing projects very soon!

Members of Lakers Bray were invited to explore, learn and participate in understanding of these woods. We learnt about birds, that stayed in the area and left to go overseas in winter. Wendy and Laura taught us about names of trees, birds, animals and other creatures. This was done through art and crafts, listening to the woodland, seeing nature and smelling.
What is a ladybird or ladybug. It is neither a bird or bug. In fact it is an insect. All creatures play a vital part in developing the woods. Trees can feed these creatures and house them. Fascinating to discover how everything in the woods are connected to one another. Wendy had a lovely game that showed us how sparse the woods would be without these connection. My favourite part was when a moth landed on my hand and people took photos as it stayed there for a long time.
I have asked Laura and Wendy if I can go back next year to learn more.

We are delighted to share some truly wonderful news with our Lakers community. Lakers Sports & Social has been approached by a generous donor who has offered to fully fund a brand-new respite programme for our members and their families — completely free of charge to participants and to the club.
This initiative marks an important step forward in supporting not only our members but also their families, and it aligns closely with one of our key strategic goals: providing meaningful, practical support for those who care for our members every day.
This pilot respite programme will launch in September and will provide in-home weekend respite care in 4-hour time slots:
🕐 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
🌙 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Sessions will be available on both Saturdays and Sundays, giving families valuable time to rest, recharge, and focus on their own needs while knowing their loved one is receiving safe, professional care at home.
The programme will be delivered in partnership with Karo, a highly regarded healthcare organisation, ensuring the highest standards of care and support for all participating families.
This is a pilot project, and if it proves successful, we aim to expand access to more families later this year, with the ultimate goal of making this respite service available to all interested Lakers families on an ongoing basis.
